Andreas Nanakis was born in the city of Herakleion, Crete. After he completed his studies at the elementary and high school he attended the Pedagogical Academy of Herakleion. Afterwards, he studied at the the Faculty of History at the Philosopical School of Kluz, Romania. A year later, he continued his studies at the Faculty of History and Archeology at the Philisophical School of the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki, and after receiving his diploma, he studied at the Theological School of the same University. He continued his post-graduate studies at the Faculty of History at the Philosophical School and later at the Pontificio Instituto  Orientale, Rome. In Fabruary, 1989, he was elected as a Lecturer at the Faculty of the Theological School at Thessaloniki, where he teaches as a Professor the subject of Church History. In 2001 he was elected Metropolitan Bishop of Arkalochori, Kastelli and Viannos, Crete.
