Dr. Prodromos Zanis, Professor

Prodromos Zanis is Professor at the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, School of Geology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). He received a degree in Physics in 1992 from School of Physics, AUTH, a M.Sc. in Atmospheric Sciences in 1994 from School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, UK and a Ph.D. degree in Natural Sciences in 1999 from Institute of Geography, Department of Meteorology and Climatology, University of Bern, Switzerland. He worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, Physics Department, AUTH from 1999 to 2003. For the period 2003-2007, he was appointed a fixed position of research assistant at the Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology, Academy of Athens, Greece. At 2007, he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, AUTH and since 2018 first grade Professor. Prodromos Zanis has more than 25 years of experience on basic and applied research on atmospheric physics and chemistry with emphasis on ozone, aerosols, reactive gases, air pollution, short-lived climate forcers, chemistry-climate interactions, regional climate change, air quality and regional climate modelling. He has more than 110 publications in peer-reviewed scientific international journals with more than 4000 third-party citations and an H-factor of 39. He has served as:
board member of the Environmental Physics Division of the European Physical Society (2006-2012),
coordinator of the Outstanding Student Poster contest at European Geophysical Union in Atmospheric Sciences Division (2012-2018),
Director of the MSc course in "Meteorology Climatology and Atmospheric Environment, School of Geology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2016 -2017),
Director of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, School of Geology, AUTH (2017-2019),
Lead Author in chapter 6 (Short-lived climate forcers) of WGI AR6 of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) (2018-2021),
member of the Scientific Committee of the Ministry for Environment and Energy of Greece for facing Climate Change (2020-2022),
member of the National Committee facing Desertification of the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food (2021-2022).
Currently he is:
Core Member of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) on Reactive Gases (RG) (2023 - present),
Vice Head of the School of Geology, AUTH (2023 - present).
