Costas Tsougras was born in Volos, Greece, in 1966. He studied piano, accordion and theory at the Volos Hellenic Conservatory, obtaining his accordion diploma in 1982. After studying chemistry (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, bachelor in 1987), he pursued studies in musicology and composition (bachelor in music, 1993, School of Music Studies, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; composition diploma, 1998, New Conservatory of Thessaloniki, Chr. Samaras' class). In 2002 he successfully completed his PhD project in music theory & analysis (A.U.Th, Demetre Yannou, supervisor) entitled "The Generative Theory of Tonal Music and Modality-Research based on the analysis of '44 Greek miniatures' for piano by Yannis Constantinidis". The dissertation was published by University Studio Press in 2003 as the first volume of the "Library of Musicology" series (D. Yannou, editor).

He has attended seminars and courses on composition and music analysis with Christos Samaras, Theodore Antoniou, Fred Lerdahl, Jonathan Kramer, Tristan Murail, Eero Tarasti, et al. In 2000 he was a visiting scholar at the Music Department of the Columbia University, New York, where he attended advanced music theory seminars and worked on his PhD project with Dr. Fred Lerdahl.

He worked (1996-2004) as an adjunct professor at the School of Music of A.U.Th., teaching "Tonal Harmony" and "Analysis". Ηe was elected lecturer of systematic musicology in 2004, assistant professor in 2009 and associate professor in 2016. He has teached "Analysis of Harmony and Form", "Methodology of Music Analysis", "Counterpoint", "Stylistic Composition" and "Introduction to 20th century Music". Also, since 2000 he teaches music theory and composition at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

His main research interests are: music theory and analysis, contemporary music, cognitive psychology of music, computational musical models, et al. His musicological research has been presented at Greek and international conferences and has been published in Greek and international journals (Musicae Scientiae, Journal of Interdisciplinary Music Studies, Quaderni dell' Istituto Liszt, Polyphonia, et al). He has participated in numerous conference organising committees, notably for the
Joint ICMPC-ESCOM Conference 2012 (co-chair) and the 30th Conference of the International Society for Music Education 2012. He is a member of ESCOM, SMT, SMA, etc, and has been (2004-2014) editor of "Musical Pedagogics", the journal of the Greek Society for Music Education.

He composes since 1992. His music has won awards at composition competitions and has been performed in Greece and abroad by acclaimed musicians and ensembles (Thessaloniki State Symphonic Orchestra, Greek Contemporary Music Ensemble, dissonART Ensemble, New Hellenic Quartet, Emilios Riadis Quartet, Idee Fixe Ensemble, Piandaemonium, Iowa Brass Quintet, etc). In 2012 he represented the Greek Composers' Union as an invited composer at the ISCM World Music Days in Belgium. Three of his chamber music works have been published on CD. He is a member of the Greek Composers' Union since 1999.

He has also worked as orchestrator for concerts, discography and music competitions, and as a Tonmeister for CD productions. He has performed with various Greek composers and artists as an accordionist in concerts and recordings (45 participations in CD productions of various musical genres: songs, improvised music, stage music, film music, etc). He has cooperated five times with the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and one time with the Thessaloniki Municipal Symphony Orchestra as an accordionist. Since 2004 he is a member (accordionist and orchestrator) of the Plaza Ensemble, performing in Greece and abroad.
