Nikos Pleros is a Lecturer at the Department of Informatics (CSD), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece, since September 2007 and a collaborative faculty member at the Information Technologies Institute, Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). He obtained the Diploma and the PhD Degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2000 and 2004, respectively. From 2005 until September 2007 he was a Teaching and Research Associate at the Photonics Communications Research Laboratory (PCRL) at NTUA.

In 2008, he co-founded the Photonics Systems and Networks (Phos-NET) research group. Visit Phos-NET's website for more details about the laboratory insfrastructure and the group's activities!

His research interests include all aspects of optical communications and photonic systems spanning from integrated photonic devices to optical networking concepts. His more recent interests include optical interconnects, with the emphasis being on the exploitation of silicon photonics and plasmonics towards Network-on-Chip functionalities, optical RAM and optical cache memory technologies and architectures, optical wireless access and Radio-over-fiber systems and networks.

Dr. Pleros has published more than 120 articles in scientific journals and international conferences including several invited contributions. He has co-ordinated or participated in several research projects funded by the European Commission within the FP6 and FP7 framework programs, including RAMPLAS, PLATON, PhoxTrot, MIRAGE, LASAGNE, MUFINS, etc. (details at Phos-Net's website). Dr. Pleros is recipient of the 2003 IEEE/LEOS Graduate Student Fellowship that is annually granted to 12 PhD candidates world-wide. In 1993, he was awarded the 15th prize in the Greek Mathematical Olympiad.

Dr. Pleros has co-organized the OFC 2012 Symposium on Plasmonics for Optical Interconnects, while he has also erved as Topical Chair on the “Radio-over-Fiber Networks: Technologies and Architectures” topic in the IEEE/LEOS Summer Topicals Meeting 2009. He has participated as Technical Program Committee member in several international conferences. He is a member of the IEEE Photonics Society, the IEEE Communications Society and of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

"If you came into this world only for counting your years and leave, then you

do not need to be afraid of anything. A prudent man gets never in trouble...But

if our world will some day get destroyed, then it will have been destroyed by

its prudent people. Because prudent men, due to their prudence, have helped

cruel people to get even more cruel."
