He carried out his doctorate under the supervision of Prof. M.E. Tzanakakis on ecology of the mite Petrobia harti  with emphasis on diapause. PhD in Biology, 1995. University of Amsterdam, Department of Pure and Applied Ecology. He carried out his second doctorate under the supervision of Prof. M.W. Sabelis and Dr. A. Veerman on physiological aspects of diapause induction and termination in the spider mite Tetranychus urticae.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Development and reproduction of insects, spider and predatory mites, Insect and Mite Ecology, Insecticide and acaricide effects on insects, predatory and spider mites, Cold hardiness of insects and mites, Functional responses of predatory mites, Effects of environmental factors on the induction and termination of diapause in mites and insects, on the physiological aspects of diapause induction and termination in spider mites and insects, Olfactory responses of predatory mites, Rearing predatory mites (effects of pollens and other food sources). Principal investigator in more than 30 research projects.  ). Studied insects and mites: Bacrocera (Dacus) oleae, Spider mites (Tetranychus urticae, Panonychus (Metatetranychus) ulmi, Petrobia (Tetranychina) harti), Predatory phytoseiid mites and predatory  insects (Euseius finlandicus, Neoseiulus californicus, Typhlodromus kerkirae, Chrysopa formosa, Chrysoperla agilis, Dichochrysa prasina, Coccinelidae), Thrips tabaci, Frankliniella occidentalis, Wireworms (Elateridae), Mosquitoes, Whiteflies (Trialeuroides vaporariorum, Bemisia tabaci), Heliothis armigera.

 

In the University of Reading, U.K., he followed the International Course of Acarology, specialising in plant mites, August 27 to September, 9, 1990.

 

In the Agricultural University of Warsaw, Department of Applied Entomology, he carried out research on taxonomy of phytophagous and predatory mites, 5-30 November 1991.

 
 
RESEARCH PROJECTS-GRANTS

He has been principle investigator (Scientific responsible) in 40 research projects concerning biology, ecology and control of injurious insects and mites as well as beneficial insects and mites and effects of pesticides on them (olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae), soil insects (Agriotes sp.), Mosquitoes, Thrips, Aphids, Tetranychid mites, Predatory mites, Predatory and parasitoid insects etch.) which were funded by various sources and employed by the Research Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. A list of 28 selected research projects is given below.

 

1. Research program on the ecology and biology of the red spider mite Panonychus ulmi and certain natural enemies laying emphasis on diapause termination and integrated management. 1994-1996. Employer: Research Committee of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

 

2. Research program on the Development of the required technology for the application of an Integrated Production Program of Peach and Cherry fruits in Greece. Duration 1995-1998. Role: Scientific responsible for the part of the project concerning Integrated Management of mites. Employer: Research Committee of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

 

3. Research on collection and evaluation of Greek and Chinese populations of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus regarding the biological control of the two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae. Invited speaker in more than 20 meetings in various areas of Greece concerning biology and control of injurious insects and mites to various crops. These meetings were organized by local greek authorities for agriculturists and growers.

 

Invited author from the Editor of the International Journal Acta Societatis Zoologicae Bohemicae for writing a review paper on Ecophysiology of Arthropods.
