Orestis Kalogirou
was born in Thessaloniki in 1960. He obtained his BSc in Physics from the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1983 and his PhD in 1988 from the
same University. In 1991 he worked as a post-doc in the University of
Hamburg and in 1993-1996 as a research fellow in the Institute for
Materials Science, NCSR “Demokritos”,
Athens. In 1996 he was elected Assistant Professor in the Physics
Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 2002 he became
Associate Professor and in 2010 Professor. In 2008-2009 he worked as a
Visiting Researcher in the Magnetic Materials Laboratory, Dept. of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University, Boston.
Fulbright Visiting Scholar for
the academic year 2016-2017 at Center for Systems Biology, Harvard
Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital.
Since
February 2020, President of the Hellenic NARIC
(National Acatemic Recognition and Information Centre).
Among his scientific interests are synthesis and study of the structural,
electrical and magnetic properties of materials and the biomedical
applications of magnetic nanoparticles in particular magnetic
hyperthermia for cancer treatment. He has published
105
publications in peer reviewed journals and 20 publications in peer
reviewed proceedings volumes (>1170 non-self-citations;
h-index=21); 134
presentations at international conferences.
