Thesis’ Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to use tools
from algebra, in particular primary decomposition, to study conditional
independence of jointly Gaussian random variables. We discuss how ideals arise
from conditional independence relations. Then we study algebraic and geometric
properties of varieties arising from representable and complete relations on
random vectors of small length following Drton and
Xiao, 2010. We also show a result of Sullivant, 2009,
namely that Gaussian conditional independence has no finite complete characterisation.

Τίτλος: Recollements of Derived
Module Categories
Recollements of abelian/triangulated
categories are exact sequences of abelian/triangulated
categories, where the inclusion and the quotient functors
have left and right adjoints. They appear quite
naturally in various settings and are omnipresent in representation theory. Recollements in which all categories involved are module
categories (abelian case) or derived categories of
module categories (triangulated case) are of particular interest. In the abelian case, the standard example is the recollement induced by the module category of a ring R with
an idempotent element e, and in the triangulated case the standard example is
given as the derived counterpart of this recollement
of module categories when the ideal ReR is
stratifying. The latter recollement is called
stratifying.
In the first part of the talk, we show that a recollement
whose terms are module categories is equivalent to one induced by an idempotent
element. Then, we show that every derived recollement
of a finite dimensional hereditary algebra is equivalent to a stratifying one.
