V. RESEARCH AREA-INTERESTS-ACTIVITIES
My research activity is focused in the field of Physical Geography of coastal and inland water systems. The scientific field of Physical Geography is widespread and includes various sub-research areas such as geomorphology, oceanography, hydrology, paleogeography, coastal geomorphology, quaternary science, and other. From the above objects my research related to the action of water bodies within a system (e.g. river, lake or offshore) and the interaction with the system, such as corrosion processes and sediment deposition. A central goal has been the monitoring of the physicochemical characteristics of water, its action, spatially and temporally, and its movements, in order to quantify the natural phenomena. Moreover, modern science has gained a remarkable “tool” for assessing water circulation in the hydrological cycle as well as the climatic conditions under which carbonate material deposits. This tool is radiocarbon 14C and stable isotopes: 18O, 2H and 13C, which are also characterized as “environmental isotopes”. In recent years, I have developed collaboration with national (NCSR Demokritos) and international (Rudjer Boskovic InstituteRBI) scientific centers both at the level of personal co-operation and in the supervision of masters and doctoral theses in collaboration with researchers. To date, I have addressed with isotope methodology environmental questions on coastal and lake systems in North Greece and the new field that arise in international scientific community is that of transitional and coastal water systems.
