Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Plant Breeding
Director: Dr. Apostolos B. Scaltsoyiannes, Prof.
The
field of the laboratory of Forest Genetics and Forest Tree Breeding is
the application of genetics and breeding principals in the study of
forest tree species and their populations and in the creation of
improved material of forestry. The laboratory has been for a long time
active in the study of the extend and the nature of genetic variation
in natural and artificial forest tree populations and in the use of
methodologies stemming from quantitative, biochemical and molecular
genetics, as well as biotechnology, for the assessment of the genetic
structure and partitionment of such variation, for the protection and
conservation of forest genetic resources, for the assessment of
environmental pollution impact on the genetic structure of forest tree
populations, for the establishment of short rotation intensive biomass
plantations for energy conservation and for macro- and micropropagation
including tissue culture.
