Biographical
Note
Kostas Chardas
was born in Athens in 1970. His graduate music studies lead to diplomas in
accordion (1985, National Conservatoire), piano (with distinction and first
prize, 1994 Athinaikon Conservatoire), Harmony, Counterpoint Fugue (1989, 1991,
1994, Athinaikon Conservatoire) and a Bachelor in Music (1996, Department of
Music of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).
His postgraduate
studies in England were granted by the Greek Academy and culminated in a Post
Graduate Certificate in piano (Trinity College of Music, 1996), a MMus in
Performance and Related Studies (University of London, 1997) and a PhD
(University of Surrey, 2006). His thesis was published in 2010 under the title The Music for Solo Piano of Yannis
A. Papaioannou up to 1960: An Analytical, Biographical and Contextual Approach
by Lambert Academic Publishing (SaarbrŸcken).
In England he
worked as an official accompanist – vocal coach at Trinity
College of Music. In Greece he has taught piano, harmony and history of Music
at the Municipal Conservatoire of Zografou and Music at the private secondary
school "Polytropi Armonia". From 2007 he teaches music theory,
analysis, aspects of Greek music and piano at the Department of Music of the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (in 2009 he was appointed Lecturer of
Systematic Musicology).
He was the
scientific curator of the exhibition "Yannis A. Papaioannou, Composer,
Teacher, the Quest, the Pioneer" that was held at Benaki Museum of Athens
in 2004. From 2006 he has been working on the critical editions of works by
Yannis Papaioannou for PHILIPPOS NAKAS THE MUSIC HOUSE editions.
He has published numerous papers in scientific
journals, books and conference proceedings on the following research
areas: music theory and analysis, Greek art music, music analysis and
performance, music of the 19th and 20th centuries. He has
written entries on aspects of Greek music for international encyclopedias
(Grove Music Online and the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World).
His research
project "Study of the performance practice of Greek
contemporary Music in Greece, 1960-1990" will be funded (February 2014 - February 2015) by
the Research Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Kostas is also an
active pianist. He has attended piano masterclasses with Domna
Evnouchidou, Martino Tirimo, Roberto Szidon, Philip Fowke, Andrew Wilde και Neil Immelman. During the academic year 1995-96 he was awarded in the competitions
"John Halford", "Ηannah Brooke" and "Leonard Smith" of Trinity
College.
He has given solo piano and chamber music recitals in Greece, England and the
Czech Republic. He is a member of Piandaemonium Ensemble (12 Pianists - 6
Pianos). In 2013 the CD Y.
A. Papaipannou: In the Depth of the Looking Glass was
published by Naxos, in which he participated as a pianist, having, also the
co-ordination of the overall production. His piano performances have been
broadcasted by the Third Programme of the Greek National Radio.
